It all began in 1927 when it was first called "Silent Club," but when it was refused funds for sports equipment. The young men changed it to "Sphinx Club" and were able to get grants for a while, then there came the Cosmopolitan Club in 1937, formed from the Sphinx Club and Athletic Club.

Because of the great expense involved separately, these groups merged in 1940 and incorporated themselves into the Los Angeles Club of the Deaf which is now better known as "LACD." LACD purchased its own home in downtown in 1945.

However, when the number of members decreased, the LACD decided to sell the property in 1985 and is currently renting a wing at the Greater Los Angeles Council on Deafness (GLAD) building. The number of members has blossomed rapidly in the past few years, especially through LACD's successful social functions.
