Fall 2000
We all were saddened by Lil Skinner's death and we still remember her as an active person who did almost everything. One of her numerous contributions was writing LACD Topics for a very long time, and now that she is no longer with us, I will carry on the newsletter. Even though her act is quite hard to follow, I will try my best to keep you posted.LACD's next general meeting will be on Saturday, November 18th at 4 p.m and it will be presided by Roger Skinner. It will be held in Jean Marie Chisholm Building at CSUN. The annual brunch will still be at Odyssey Restaurant on Saturday, December 16th at 11 a.m. It is 15 dollars for members and 21 dollars for non-members. Frances Skinner is in charge of this event, and feel free to contact her for further details. We are honored to have Mel Carter as the Master of Ceremonies. Farwest Athletic Association of the Deaf had its softball tournament at Phoenix, Arizona last August, and our LACD ladies won the championship!! We are proud to say that Wendy Jaramillo, captain of LACD softball team, was voted as the most valuable player. Patty Delgado was chosen as Golden Glove (best defense). Our ladies were chosen on first All-Star team: Wendy Jaramillo, Patty Delgado, Pam Smiley, and Andrea Apodaca. The second All-Star team: Nancy Loya, Nicole Simms, and Suzanne Stecker. After winning first place at FAAD, the ladies went to Las Vegas, Nevada for the National Softball Association of the Deaf (formerly AAAD). In their first game they beat a team from Chicago, but they lost to the defending champion, Tampa Bay. They went into loser bracket and lost again to the Denver team.
John Goul (our LACD softball coach), Roy Lopaty (manager), and I (team mom) have been helping the players with their fund raising events during the past few months by selling drinks and candies at LACD's social night. When Dot Trickey was not available to sell sandwiches, the ladies would sell food such as subway and pizza. With all the computer jazz going on everywhere, LACD just bought its own domain name and the address is www.lacd.org. Suzanne Stecker is currently designing and developing the Website which should be fully done sometime soon. Last June Temple Beth Solomon of the Deaf celebrated its 40th anniversary. They had it at Warner Center Marriott Hotel in Woodland Hills. They recently sold the property and moved to a new site at another temple in Reseda. The wedding bells have rung for our member, Mary Greenstone's granddaughter (Myron's daughter) who got married last spring. Wendy Jaramillo, our ladies softball team's captain, will marry Rick George on Saturday, October 21st in Riverside. There may be some more weddings that I am not aware of. Some of our members have gone to Rochester, NY for National Bowling Association for the Deaf. They then made some side trips. Sebby Garro went to Connecticut for a few days with his brother. Rusty and I went to Canada to see the farm of my ancestors. Joan and Stefan Garas had a great time when they went to Israel and several other countries nearby such as Egypt. As you all remember, LACD will host the National Deaf Bowlers Association tournament from July 10th-14th 2001, and the committee is steadily work- ing hard to make it a success! The headquarter will be at Hilton Hotel in Torrance. The men will bowl at South Bay Lanes while women will bowl at Gable House Bowl. We have flyers for this event, and please ask one of us for a copy if you haven't received one yet. Please share any news with me, so that way I can make duly notes for our next newsletter. Thanks!!!
