Fall 2001

We are saddened to witness the destruction of the World Trade Center and Pentagon and deaths of innocent people. It is the day that we all will never forget. Our condolences go to the victims' families and friends.

On the weekend of August 18th, LACD softball gals landed in 2nd place with Arizona Geckos as the defending champion. Out of 6 players, Patty Delgado, Nicole Simms, and Suzanne Stecker of LACD were chosen to be on the All-Star team. The other three were from Arizona Geckos. Nicole won the Most Outstanding Player award for having the best batting average and the Golden Glove award went to Suzanne for best fielding. The team will go to New Orleans for the national softball tournament during the weekend of Sept. 29th. Good luck!!

Speaking of softball, John Goul received the Hall of Fame honor from FAAD. Not to mention the trophy was made of heavy crystal glass, but luckily John was strong enough to take it home with him. Congratulations, John!

Suzanne and I stayed in Europe for one month. We spent 2 weeks in Italy for the Deaflympics before trekking in Europe during the last 2 weeks. We visited the Deaf community center in Munich, Germany after meeting with the president in Rome. The building, owned by Deaf people, is new and still under construction. An interesting note: there are bowling lanes in the basement!

Not only that, I got the chance to meet the Venice Club of the Deaf vice-president and talk to many others about LACD. So, I truly want to thank you for surprising me with $200, and I did all I could to promote LACD, both nationally and internationally.

Jany Dyer passed away and the memorial service will take place at CHAD on Nov. 22nd. There is a fund in her honor for a new van as a new means of transportation at CHAD.

Herman Vincent passed away on July 11th and Elsie announced that the memorial service will occur at Holy Angel Church for the Deaf on Sept. 30th.

Kyle Workman passed away from ruptured aorta on Sept 15th in Las Vegas, Nevada. There will be no memorial service.

Phyllis Newman, a member of LACD for many years, passed away from heart failure on Sept.19th. As we respect her longstanding request, there will be no funeral or memorial service.

Last July, LACD hosted a national bowling tourney (NDBA) in Hawthorne. We had wonderful people on the committee who were great assets for the tournament. Believe it or not, I won the Women's Senior Citizen championship and secured second place's prize in Women's Doubles with Suzanne. Lonnie Jones, also a LACD member, earned first place in Men's Seniors.

Rita Winzelberg got into a car accident on July 15th when she was on her way home from Carson where Abe was staying for the week during the tournament. Their van was totaled but we are grateful that she is all right.

About half of the senior citizens chose not to go to Minnesota for the Deaf Senior Citizens' convention. Most airports were closed on that day and these people including some LACD members could not fly anywhere. Hence, they had to stay here.

From May 20th until June 6th Ursula Attia, Elaine Aikins, Julia Beesen, Richard Cato, Choko Tomosada, Rita and Abe Winzelberg went to Hawaii for 2 weeks. They stayed in Oahu for 10 days and then to Maui for 4 days. Polly Parsons was the group leader. They all enjoyed their stay and some may go back in 2005 to participate the western regional bowling tournament (PCDBA).

At Waikiki (Hawaii), Richard Cato gave an engagement ring to Elaine Aikins on May 22nd. These lovebirds have not set up the wedding date yet.

New Year's Eve party will hosted by LACD at GLAD. Larry Dubin is in charge of this event, and feel free to contact him for further details. Hope you all can join us and celebrate the year of 2002!

There will be LACD's Annual Brunch on December 15th at Odyssey Restaurant from 11:00 am until 4:00 pm. The admission for each member is $16 and $26 for non-members. The address is 15600 Odyssey Drive, Granada Hills, CA 91344. Contact John at veep@lacd.org if you have any further questions.

LACD's general meeting will be held at CSUN on October 20th, and be sure to attend before 3:00 pm. Seecha then!
