Spring 2001

The new year arrived with plenty of rain before we knew it, but it would be nice if it stops so we can see the sun again!!! It is now 2001 and time for my second issue of LACD Topics.

The annual Christmas brunch at Odyssey Restaurant last December was a nice one! Mel Carter was a great Master of Ceremonies and told us plenty of funny stories. Almost at the end of our event, after Esther Aheroni found out that it was Mel's birthday, she sang and "danced" a birthday song to him. It was entertaining!!!

There were some health problems among LACD members along with eternal farewell. Bernard Castaline had a mild stroke and is now recovering. His wife, Marilyn, is doing the driving for him. They both just turned 70 and plan to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary next year. Sam Intrator passed away on December 31st at the age of 90 and was buried at Mount Sinai Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Marion. Marion is going through chemotherapy and radiation and we pray that she will beat the "Big C."

Beverly Nunn passed away on January 20th after having a massive stroke. She had a heart attack a couple of weeks before her stroke. She was buried at Valhalla Memorial Park next to her husband, Henry. There was a very nice memorial service for Sharon Carter, wife of Mel Carter, on October 29th at CSUN. Several speakers flew to Northridge for the service. One of the speakers was Diane Morton of Maryland, the daughter of Lou and Jany Dyer.

Last January, the board met and agreed to change both senior citizens and students annual dues from $10 to $7.50. As for others, it will be $10 per person instead of $15. We will no longer have special membership rate for married couples. Now is the time to give Mary Greenstones payment for LACD membership dues.

The board had agreed to elect David Dobrovech as the new LACD Athletic Director. He plans to bring back men's softball team again soon. The LACD men's team disbanded a few years ago for unknown reasons. However, it will be great to have men play and represent for us, too. Wouldn't it be real neat to watch both LACD men and women teams play for FAAD this coming August in San Diego?

The LACD softball ladies will start playing in a league every Sunday in Fountain Valley, starting in March. We hope this will help the ladies strengthen their softball skills and win the National Softball Association for the Deaf tournament (NSAD, formerly AAAD) next September in New Orleans. In the past the best place we've ever had was 3rd place a few years ago.

Speaking of sports, Roy Lopaty was one of four deaf officials (referees) at California School for the Deaf in Riverside (CSDR) during the Western States Basketball Classic tournament where eight teams from different schools for the deaf. Eight teams were from Arizona (Tucson & Phoenix), Idaho, Washington, Oregon, New Mexico, and California (Riverside & Fremont). Roy will also be one of the officials at the FAAD basketball tournament in Santa Fe, New Mexico on March 9th and 10th.

Wedding bells came for Caroline Preston! Jerry Bass and she got married in Indiana last November, but they will have another wedding this July in California. Jerry will move to California to be with his new wife soon.

Don Swanson gave his wife, Loretta, a surprise 70th birthday party with the help from their children on February 3rd. Judy DeSalvio's friends hosted a surprise 60th birthday party for her on February 2nd at a restaurant in Studio City.

The committee of LACD/NDBA still meets monthly before we have our big bowling tournament in July. Here is the list of committee members:
