Summer 2001

We see more surfboards, smell suntan lotion, feel the heat, and taste those delicious BBQ burgers. Ah, summer is here!!!

LACD will host a national bowling tournament from July 11 through 14th and the headquarter is at Hilton Hotel in Torrance.

Men will bowl at South Bay Lanes, 1515 Hawthorne Blvd in Redondo Beach while women will bowl at Gable House Bowl, 22501 Hawthorne Blvd in Torrance. Silent auction is our biggest night event on Saturday at the hotel, including entertainment, and hope you allare going to join the fun!

Some of us will go to Rome, Italy for the Deaflympic Games. It is going to be loads of fun watching U.S. athletes performing their best. Suzanne, my daughter, is the Website coordinator of Deaflympics and CISS and will continue working with the media team in Rome while I will have fun visiting the city and publicizing about LACD.

Becky Bowling is so proud of her grandson, Steve, who is now a Gallaudet University football player, for he has started a DJ band. MSSD's Senior Prom will be one of Steve's performances. Her son, Dave Elliott, bought a home in Torrance and will be in Europe for one month. Her son-in-law, Jimmy DeStefano, is the head coach of USA basketball team for Deaflympics.

The LACD softball ladies have been playing softball with the Surf & Sun Softball League in Fountain Valley. They have been playing there since last March and should be able to do well during the FAAD tournament on August 18th in San Diego. If you are interested in watching them play at Mile Square Park on Brookhurst Street. Their league schedule is: June 17th at 10:15 am and 11:30 am, July 8th at 2 pm, & July 22nd at 9 am and 10:15 am.

Check www.lacd.org for our new Website, and we hope to get more old pictures for the photo gallery before October 1st! If you have any pictures, please let me know!

Last March, we had an election and the new officers are:

We are still working on finding a new place for our community center. Morris Beeson passed away on June 8th after being sick for two months. He was buried on June 12th at Mt. Siani Cemetery. His wife, Ruth, and he celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary on June 4th. He was 87 years old.

June Cope passed away February 16th after receiving a mild stroke in January. She was buried with her husband, Paul, at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Cypress. Both Paul and June were active with LACD when we had the clubhouse on Main Street.

Lou Fant, who taught drama at CSUN and was a well-known interpreter before he moved to Seattle, Washington, passed away on June 11th at the age of 69. The memorial service was held on June 15th at Seattle Central Community College. Lou is survived by his wife, Barbara Bernstein, and four children from his first marriage.

The CHAD board members gave a nice retirement party for Betty DeLaO on May 19th. The surprise gift she got from different clubs, including LACD, was tickets for two to go on Mexican cruise. She and her husband, Henry, will go on a cruise soon.

On June 10th, the representatives from MCI went to CHAD to give a short presentation on their services for the deaf. Afterwards, we gave a surprise birthday cake to Bill Woodward who is now 80 years old.

Russ Bye is now the new Administrator of CHAD and is working with Don "Nubby" Nuernberger along with board members. The rooms at CHAD have been filling up so fast and we recognized some LACD members living there now.

Before we close this, don't forget to go the NDBA/NDWBA bowling tournament in Torrance and join the FUN!
